when i got my new headphones, i thought "how else can i improve my gameplay?" so i ordered FPS freeks. then i looked into things more, and i decided to order the FragnStein.

this is a 2-piece controller. left side is like dual shock cut up in the shape of a wii controller. right side is a mouse, with 3 top buttons, and all 4 ps3 style buttons for the thumb. price range ~$75-90.

dont get on my case. i just got it last night, and i can see it being very hard to use. not only is there custom firware to deal with, there is also having to adjust in-game sensitivity and mouse sensitivity to find a good balance (which i havent found). the Bannco forums have lots of ppl discussing these very things. also, u need to choose ur mousepad wisely (see forums), since many do not work well.

in theory, using the mouse to aim/target would be a big advantage, especially for those used to playing PC FPS games. but for someone like me, born and raised on consoles, it takes alot of adjusting. i honestly think it will take me a few weeks till i feel comfortable using it. that, and button mapping is completely customizable, so i have to rethink and relearn a whole new set of buttons.

this thing is not a cheat. in fact, i dont even know if i can even USE it for online gaming. moving the mouse is still unresponsive. some buttons (L1 aim) stutter in/out, so it wont stay in zoom. i have to play around with alot of settings/firmware. but im willing to give it a try. if it runs smoothly, i think it can help me target players easier. the vast majority say it has helped their game. u can aim precisely without overaiming (i do that all the time). u can configure buttons to ur liking. its just easier to move with a mouse instead of ur thumb.

if u need any more info, let me know. the official site was great for answering alot of concerns/questions.

I googled it and had a look. Looks very PC gaming style, which in my opinion if adjusted to promptly it can be a huge advantage.. Think of how quickly u can turn and how easy it is to aim! Though my memories of playing PC games feels ancient- playing Medal of Honour: Allied Assault, and the original COD. So does this mean you will be kicking arse kuz??

here is a pic (of the button mapping pic).

Dux:
its hard to say. ive had it for 2 days (obviously not long) but it seems very hard to use. i see vids of guys using it on Youtube, and i hardly see any issues with jumpiness/stuttering (like lag in sense, with ur mouse<-->game) . when i use it, i sometimes cant hold zoom in (it will stutter in/out of zoom) which is fucking annoying, to say the least, and it will get my killed. there are times when i move my mouse, but my character doesnt move. i think IF i can get all the settings/sensitivity/mousepad issues sorted out (and playing smoothly like on vids) then this thing could rock.

but then again, maybe i was only destined for console gaming. though i see alot of weaknesses now in the console pads, maybe i just cant adjust to the weird timing/un-responsiveness of the mouse setup? on some firmwares, moving my hand a 2-3 inches means i can spin 180. on other FW, it moves me 60-75 degrees. wtf? there are inconsistencies with movement.

then there is the dilemma of whether to use acceleration FW or those w/out it. PC gamers will argue strongly that accel OFF gives precise aiming, since ur character moves consistantly to what your mouse moves. doesnt matter if u move ur hand slow/fast, moving it will do the same reaction. however, if using accel ON, moving slow gives a diff player reaction than moving it fast. in theory, it would seem using OFF is the way to go. but when i tried it, i could not spin more than about 90degrees. with accel ON, i could do 180. all the hardcore ex-PC gamers say to use accel OFF, but im not a PC gamer, and i find the accel adds a greater arc of vision (though i use medium sensitivity ~4-6). so im like, wtf... im confused.

and dont even get me started on button configs! i think ive come up with about 10-20 button setups, thinking each new one will be the end-all-be-all, but in reality nothing is working for me. i just gotta keep experimenting with a whole bunch of stuff.

is this post long enough already? tee hee. im at work, and id rather not be working, so ill keep going!

GUZ:
see pic attached. the left stick is quite handy. it feels like a cross between a dualshock, wii, remote control and cell phone. i dunno, i think its pretty cool.

i dunno if its even worth me trying it on mw2. ive got more than 100,000 kills combined for mw1+2, and now suddenly im trying to get used to a whole new configuration, new buttons, new sensitivity? am i stupid?
using it for something like BC2, where im brand new, might help me out.

If You Want My Opinion, I Would Recommend Against Using Acceleration. It's Been A Long While, But I Used To Play PC Shooters, & With Sufficient Sensitivity, Turning Isnt Much Of An Issue IMO.
Acceleration Always Seemed To Be Inconsistent To Me & Would Throw My Aim Off. Being Slightly Slower To Turn But Maintaining Aim Works Out Better. That's What Worked For Me Anyway.

Though Kuzu, If I Can Ask, What Do You Feel Are Your "Weaknesses" When It Comes To Gaming? Is It Really The Controller That Holds You Back?

ive tried 3 firmwares now, 1 without and 2 with acceleration. i could hardly move at all with the accel OFF. there is not way i can play like that. i understand the logic to it, but in terms of results for me/for my controller/for my mousepad, i cant imagine having it OFF.

well guz, one of my biggest weaknesses (besides getting frustrated, which really is a terrible weakness, since i start playing stupid, aggressive, rush-happy) is that my aim is crap. my reaction times are fine. i know what i WANT to do. i just cant put the crosshairs on target.

cant remember now if it was that bad with a new one, or only due to button mashing, but the DS3 just feels too loose to me. there is not enough tension in the stick, so i dont stop my crosshairs where i intend to shoot. this means i often over-aim or under-aim depending on the position of the enemy in relation to where im standing. i played all of R1 and COD4 on DS3 controllers, though was on my 2nd one after those 2 games. i saw a Hori pad at ToysRUs for $20, thought it was a misprint, so i jumped on that sucker.

turns out, i love the hori pad. the sticks have a smaller head *not as fat as DS3* which may make it harder to R3 melee, but gives me much greater control of my aiming. since the sticks have more tension, i dont need to press them as far down as i would a DS3. with more tension, i can strafe + fire and with more accuracy, since i can stop more or less where i intended on firing. the Hori pad was the main reason i did so well on KZ2 (at least near the end) because ALL i was doing was sniping. with the stiffer sticks, i had much better control on sniping, so i could stop on my target easier.

no, ur right, i dont think its the controller holding me back. its mostly my foolish mistakes. (running in the open, not checking corners, being too aggressive, not thinking clearly, etc.) i know that is what holds me back from being a level up from where i am. but at the same time, there seems to be alot of occasions where an enemy and i spot each other at the same time. we both fire, but because my aim is slightly off for the first few shots, i die. i figured it was worth a shot to invest in some new controllers to see if they could help me.

i honestly dont like the unresponsiveness of the mouse. its still choppy. not precise aiming at all. yet other ppl say it works fine for them. shrug.

Yeah, well like you say, I think that, to be honest most games aren't really about raw "skill." Along with your own demeanor (smart choices as you say) which is no.1 IMO, is being able to assess the situation.. Most players are predictable, & if they are doing something out of the ordinary, you can usually get a handle of what to expect of them a ways into the match. I'll probably end up referencing UC2 alot here as it's what I've been playing, but I think it goes for all games.

We are all guilty of this, myself included, but I do what "works." I will usually view all players as equal skill level, mainly cause I think, regardless of rank & personal "experience" they will generally do the same things & play the same way.

But eventually you'll end up running into that "guy" who just seems to best you. Against weaker players, you can often prevail even if hey have some sort of advantage. (better positioning or w/e)
So, for example, in this case, the guy is just too good. If he has the advantage, he'll win. So while skill is involved, I still think its more about tailoring your play style to fit the situation. People are hard-headed. I'm actually the most guilty of this. I have a certain way I want to play, & rarely want to deviate from it, for whatever reason. (Usually because I want to do it that way) So the smart player will benefit from this because the drones become so focused on getting them back, even if the situation doesn't permit it.

At the same time the guy will become complacent. What he's doing is working, so why change? You can use your team to get killed as they feverishly try to get the guy (I feel like a dick saying that, but its true) as you take a different path. Anyway, I think people become fixated on a certain aspect, so even skilled or good players can be relatively easily overcome with slight changes in style. It's very rare to meet a player that just shuts you down & varies his play so much that you never know what he's going to do.

Though in some cases there just nothing that can be done. Your team might be too weak, spawns might be BS! In those cases, you do what you can. I try not to let those games get to me. It's annoying, yeah, but online games simply arent fair. be it connection, spawns, w/e.

Though the games where you go 20-0 are cool, I personally feel most accomplished when I feel like I did the best I could, & handled each situation correctly. Even with no decision & skill "error" somethings cant be avoided. If you get jumped by 3 guys, & manage to get all of them while dying in the process, that feeling is awesome IMO. You made the best of the situation, & came out with the best possible outcome.

& like Wings has said in many of his vids, being the "annoying" guy works out great. being on the receiving end is terribly frustrating.

If the mouse is unresponsive, & toggles in/out of zoom, it sounds unusable. If others say it works fine, IDK. I don't have one. But if you like the feel of the hori pad, I think you should just use that. For improving aim... lower your sensitivity? I dunno how it is in MW2, but in UC2 for example, there are aiming tricks. You can pump up your aim sens there, but it's pretty unnecessary IMO. Since the game is in 3rd person, before firing, I'll move the camera & center it on the target as best as possible. Then you can aim down, giving accuracy as well as overcoming the lower sens limitation. (the highest sens still cant compare w/ it.) There probably isn't anything like that in MW2 though. though if you need to make a slight adjustment to your aim, I'll just hit the left stick instead. walking into the shot is sometimes easier, than correcting your aim, & sometimes overshooting it.

I realize alot of this stuff isnt all that relevant to the topic, or pretty obvious... though a guy I play UC2 with didn't realize alot of the things I told him about the game, so there you go. I don't wanna sound patronizing or like I know best, but that's how I view things.

good tips. not much time now so i cant respond properly.

fragnstein. im getting used to it gradually. i think my aiming has indeed improved using it. that is, i can target an enemy and keep consistent fire on him. the problem is that i am still completely awkward with the diff button locations and just a general sense of "moving my character". so for now, im sticking to long range weapons with a recon-type attitude.

i was getting tired of being owned up close (new controller problems + Asahi lag, wee) so i tried out my beloved Hori pad for a game. WOW. i seriously honestly not exaggerating cant believe how hard it was for me to use it!! i know the button layouts by heart, but when i tried to track an enemy from afar, my aim was off by a good 15degrees. that is huge. to put it in different perspective, i saw a guy from 100 feet out. tried to aim on him and overaimed by about 35 feet. aaaahahahhahaha. seriously. that was amazing how much i had adjusted to the mouse.

so i went right back to the fragnstein. i will keep with it. i just need to learn to get my character to crouch, jump, strafe, and do all the things i used to do with the DS3.

oh, and i even put my sens to 3 (out of 10) for the Hori pad, and still doing terrible with aiming! weird, but very interesting (if i liked physics and psychology) to realize how much ive adapted to a new controller and completely forgotten the old one, in one week.

Didnt know where to put this but I guess this is the place... Great post up above Guzman btw...

Out of pure excitement I think, I impulse bought the Black Ops Precision Aiming controller by MAD CATZ yesterday. It was on display by the register, and I didnt even pick it up r anything to check out how it felt... O well LOL.

Anyways, upon further investigation online after the fact I saw that this company does not exactly have the best reputation....

What I can say at this point is the contoller itself looks pretty dope, (strictly appearance, graphics) and now that Ive used it it feels ok too , though quite stiff compared to the DS3. I made myself carsick and had to quit playing actually, the way the L and R stick make the screen move was all wrong at first.

Settled down this morning and now I think I understand the way it works. It will take some practice, not quite a ground up reworking but I estimate it will take at least a few days for using this contoller to become instinctive.

The main feature for me is the 2 extra buttons it has underneath, (in addition to RL1 and 2 on the front, that can be assigned functions - namely the Circle slash for me as I am on the Tactical set up - knifing in MW2 was quite simply put a "non function" for me... I was hoping that this would alow me to add knives to my repertiore for Black Ops... lol.

The hard part about using the controller is the need (re "carsick" above) to use the 'Aim' button underneath on hte right to 'steady' the right analoge stick movements. i.e., if I decide to stick with this controller it means I will have one extra button to use to control my guy properly - and the way the controller is there is not a clear way around this. Maybe there is but I haven't found it yet...

Quality wise the unit itself seems alright, not quite as cheap or finicky as stuff from this company was made out to be like online. Useless aesthetic stuff like neon lights under the sticks is bit over the top/tacky though..

Anyhow this is how it is and Ill keep u posted on how this controller is if anybody's interested.

Played last night with teh controller and I think I've decided to use it.

On lower sensitivity, I was able to rope in the dynamics of the sticks, and also got used to the tension in them, and overall Im quite happy with the feel of it.

Also dont need to use the aim funtion at all, can control decently using it just like a DS3 - with the luxury of havng circle and trianble buttons underneath - which means the only time I need to take my right thumb off the right stick now is to jump. Thats good I think.

The physical size of the controller is also a size or two bigger than the DS3, and for adult hands that is also a good thing.

So at the moment, my review of this set up is quite possitive - I would recommend this controller to anyone but especially to Tactical guys.

O and BTW, drop shots in Black Ops pretty much work the same as in MW2.

Hmm...I think I'm alright witht the DS3. I've never really felt like I needed more in a controller.

If it makes you play better& isn't cheating, ain't nothing wrong with it!
